BRIDES (NYFES)

In the summer of 1922, a ship sails from Smyrna with 700 picture brides, the vast majority of them Greek women bound for New York and waiting husbands-to-be. The complex  intersection of the old and the new world cultures is embodied in a shipboard romance  between an American photographer and a Greek seamstress. Their story unfurls in a manner that illuminates the hopes, fears and desperation of these courageous young women.

Tenth Anniversary screening

Following the screening, director Pantelis Voulgaris and scenarist Ioanna Karystiani
will be interviewed by Scott Foundas, chief critic of Variety.

LOST IN THE BEWILDERNESS

Thirty years in the making, this fascinating documentary traces the life of a Greek boy who is five years old when his parents divorce and his mother kidnaps him and takes him out of the country.  Eleven years later, he returns to Greece, a stranger to his  family and to everything Greek, and he begins the process of being reintroduced to his culture.

PALIKARI: LOUIS TIKAS AND THE LUDLOW MASSACRE

One hundred years ago, in an attempt to break the longest strike the USA had ever seen, the Colorado National Guard fired upon striking miners and set fire to a tent colony that 1,200 people called home. This documentary explores the role of Cretan born Greek immigrant andtrade union activist Louis Tikas in what became known as the Ludlow Massacre.

Grieving the death of her beloved dog, a woman seeks the company of her neighbors to dispel her loneliness. This reaching out for human compassion, however, turns into something far more complicated as the woman becomes increasingly involved in her neighbors’ lives. Kora Karvouni was named Best Actress of the year by the Hellenic Film Academy for her portrayal of the lonely woman.

A conversation with Mr. Loules, hosted by Prof. Konstantinos Kornetis
(European and Mediterranean Studies, NYU) will follow the screenings.
